The September Experiment – Day 3

Day three of the September experiment didn’t feel so good. I felt like I drafted without a clear focus. See what I was able to put together and share your tips on drafting synergy decks.

The September Experiment

During September I am going to draft everyday to see if I improve. Yesterday (September 1st) I drafted on MTGO and went 2-1. Sadly that was because the guys I beat conceded on the 2nd game of our match. Oh well.

x/1’s in M15 draft

I’ve been on an absolute tear recently. I am something like 16-4 in my last 20 matches of M15 limited.

M15 Limited

Provided by ChannellFireball

I think this is for multiple reasons including very good luck, but I would also like to relate it to how I have been evaluating creatures with 1 point of toughness. In each color there is a premier two drop with 1 toughness: Red has Altac Bloodseeker, White has Oreskos Swiftclaw, Blue has Welkin Tern, Green has Satyr Wayfinder, Black has Child of Night, and even the artifacts have Bronze Sable.

Black in M15

Black in M15Here we are, the final color in our metagame breakdown. Black in M15 is most likely the weakest color. However, it will deceive you because of the fact that many of the strongest commons and uncommons in the set are black.

Green in M15

In M15 Green seems to be very hit or miss with a special lack of depth. This is shown in the commons and uncommons especially. The rares are very powerful and include many bombs, but the backbone of your base Green deck is nearly always underwhelming.

Blue in M15

Blue in M15In my initial power ranking, I put Blue in M15 as the third best color. However, now I think it may be worse than Green but am still not sure. We’ll have to give the format a little more time and see how everything shakes out. Here it goes…

White in M15

white in M15An overview of White in M15 including the viable token strategy. As a white drafter in M15 you’ll have several options at your fingertips and can build your deck with game crushing synergies. White’s archetypes, much like Red’s, are all based on killing the opponent as quickly as possible.

Red in M15

red in M15Red is very much the best color in M15 Limited. At all points on the curve Red has the strongest cards and it also has very efficient kill spells and bombs. As I go through each color I am going to give you my thoughts on the top 5 non-rare cards of that color and then rank the 5 possible archetypes that color shows up in, in order. Here we go!

Metagaming

metagamingMetagaming in Limited is vastly different than in constructed. This is mainly due to the quickly evolving nature of the format. Drafts are happening all the time on MTGO unlike major constructed events that occur primarily on weekends. It is also more difficult to force colors in a draft than it is to build a deck for a constructed event. Even though you know Red is the best color, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be opened at your spot on the table.

M15 Color Breakdown

M15 color breakdownAt the pre-release I found red to be by far the best color. I actually saw this and planned to play red at the pre-release. It turned out that my pool wasn’t strong enough to play red but I still thought the color was bonkers. I opened a bunch of goblins and could have had a very good aggressive deck if not for the lack of a solid support color. I ended up U/B control and lost in the finals to an aggressive red deck.

Best Online Magic: The Gathering Store

Card KingdomThere are SO MANY online retailers for Magic: The Gathering that I decided to conduct an experiment to determine the best one.

My main criteria were product price, shipping costs and speed of delivery. I also considered customer service and the user friendliness of the site.

I started out by ordering one booster pack from four different online retailers…

My Rant on Card Sleeves

mtg card sleevesI cannot imagine playing Magic without using card sleeves. Just thinking about shuffling cards without sleeves, and the mental image of the sides splitting and getting white makes me cringe.

These days there is no excuse for not protecting your cards, and yet, at every tournament, I still play against at least one person with an unsleeved deck.

WHY?!

How to Prepare for a Draft in 5 Easy Steps (and Sit Down with Confidence at Your Next Match)

prepareShowing up to a draft unprepared is overwhelming. When I did my first booster draft I had many questions such as: Which cards are good? How much are cards worth? What’s a good strategy? Are there new rules or abilities? What do they do?

Answering these questions ahead of time, and showing up prepared, will increase your chances of winning and help you have more fun because you can focus on the draft, deck building and game play.

Let’s look at five things you can do to prepare for a booster draft. The are:

How To Evaluate a Card for Draft and NEVER Make a Bad Pick Again

What is the ‘best’ cardMagic: The Gathering Card Evaluation

There is a lot of pressure in trying to pick the “best” card when drafting. The truth is the best card depends on your goals and how deep into the draft you are. I will assume your goal is to win the draft and not to draft money cards or pull cards you can use in your other decks.

With that in mind, let’s say you’ve already chosen your colors; a card in line with those colors will be better for you than …
